Col. William Burgess was born in 1622 in Treero, Wales(now England). He
lived in Marlborough, England. He owned a vessel and brought many to the
Norfolk area of America. He later moved to North Hampton, where he married
Elizabeth Robins, daughter of Edward Robins. In 1649/50 he led a large
colony to America, went up the bay and settled in Anne Arundel County,
MD.
He was a justice, and delegate/councilor 1657-1685. He was also High sheriff,
Commander-in-chief of militia of 4 counties and also Deputy Governor under
Lord Baltimore
He owned over 5000 acres of land and gave 100 acres on which Londontown
was built. Londontown became a very popular port for trading and travel.
He operated a fleet of merchant vessels raiding between Londontown and
Bristol, England
William died in 1686 and was buried on the hill overlooking the port. In
abt 1944 four large crypts were moved from the hill and placed on the right
side of the entrance to All Hallow's Church, built in 1692. In 1960
the Army and Navy Chapters of the D.A.R. placed a bronze tablet before
the crypt of Col. William Burgess.
William
married 3 times. His second wife was Sophia Ewen, widow of Maj. Richard
Ewen. They had a daughter, Susannah. His third wife was Ursala Puddington.
they had at least 7 children: Benjamin, John, Joseph, William, George,
Elizabeth, and Anne.
